Denver - The members of The Medicinal Strings
began their musical careers as a bluegrass-folk band recording albums and
playing small venues throughout Colorado, Minnesota, and Wyoming. As they
progressed through the competitive world of the music business, the band
made a conscious decision to change the direction of their music. Instead
of playing and writing for a mainstream audience, The Medicinal Strings
began to focus their art on those who entertainers often ignore. In 2005,
The Medicinal Strings gained 501(c)3 (tax-exempt) status from the IRS,
becoming a certified public charity titled The Medicinal Strings
Foundation. With the help of donations, foundations, and fundraising
events, the group is focused on their mission to share, promote, and
inspire the arts within the lives of those most in need.
In the summer of 2006, the mission of
The Medicinal Strings came to life for the first time as the group performed at
more than 60 homeless shelters, soup kitchens and other nonprofit organizations
around the nation. During the summer of 2007, the work of The Medicinal Strings
Foundation will continue to promote solidarity, spark interest in the arts and
bring positive energy to underserved communities. They will be performing at
Swallow Hill Music Association, a nonprofit music center dedicated to the the
preservation and presentation of folk music in the Rocky Mountain region. As the
oldest multicultural folk arts organization in the region, it is the only place
of its kind between Freight & Salvage in Berkeley and the Old Town School in
Chicago. The Medicinal Strings will take the stage at Swallow Hill on Friday,
June 8 at 8 p.m.
