Denver — Swallow Hill is pleased to present folk artist Greg Brown, whose laudable career spans more than 30 years and almost as many albums (the exact count is 28) at the L2 Church, 1477 Columbine Street in Denver on Saturday, December 15 at 8 p.m. He will be joined by a very special guest opener, his daughter and fellow songwriter, Pieta Brown.

Greg Brown's mother played electric guitar, his grandfather played banjo, and his father was a Holy Roller preacher in the Hacklebarney section of Iowa, where the Gospel and music are a way of life. His first professional singing job came at age 18 in New York City, running hootenannies at the legendary Gerdes Folk City. Brown's songs have been performed by everyone from Willie Nelson to Carlos Santana, from Shawn Colvin to Mary Chapin Carpenter and more. His 1989 album, One Big Town, earned Greg three and a half stars in Rolling Stone, chart-topping status in AAA and The Gavin Report's Americana rankings, and his first Indie Award from NAIRD (National Association of Independent Record Distributors). His 1992 release, Dream Café, was also a huge critical success, called an "unassuming triumph," while Z Magazine expressed the opinion that it rivaled Bob Dylan's Blood on the Tracks.

Following Dream Café, Brown teamed up with Bill Morrissey to record Friend of Mine, which earned him his first Grammy nomination. The Poet Game (1994) received another Indie award from NAIRD, and his critically acclaimed 1996 release, Further In, was a finalist for the same award. Rolling Stone’s four-star review of Further In dubbed Greg "a wickedly sharp observer of the human condition." 1997's Slant 6 Mind was released by the record label he founded, Red House Records, and earned him his second Grammy nomination. Brown's latest CD, One Night, is a re-release of a 1983 live performance originally on Minneapolis' Coffeehouse Extemporé Records.

Greg Brown's music is an intricate mix, using gospel, blues, country, rock, and jazz to present themes that move him deeply: family, home, poetry, and the natural world. A firm believer in community and ecological responsibility, he often uses his music to support these causes, be it by performing at benefit concerts, selling benefit CDs, or just using his gift to craft songs that create awareness of these causes. When he is not busy touring, Brown splits his time between Iowa and Missouri with his children and wife, Iris DeMent.
